SAFETY STANDARDS

In 2002, in response to public health and safety issues the Consumer Affairs Division of The Treasury introduced a mandatory safety regulation in the form of Consumer Product Safety Standard: Bunk Beds. This standard focuses on the elimination of potential entrapment hazards, snags, and hanging points to ensure safe and comfortable use.

The safety standard focuses on:

  • Guard rail specifications such as size, position and strength of the rail.
Elimination of gaps in either the guard rail or bunk frame that could be potential points of entrapment.
  • Removal of any protrusions that could potentially snag onto clothing and possibly lead to injury
  • Since the 1st of November 2002, all suppliers and retailers in the Australian market have been required to sell bunks that satisfy this new Consumer Product Safety Standard: Bunk Beds.

Pacific Brands (Sleepmaker) was one of the first industry suppliers to recognise this new product safety standard and developed Sleep Safe™·, a bunk bed range which has been engineered to meet these new design requirements.

Every bunk in the Sleep Safe™. Bunk range has been tested and certified by a NATA accredited mechanical testing laboratory.

Our 'Commercial' Range of bunks comply to the AS/NZS 2003 Standard for bunk beds, the highest level of compliance in Australia.

Sleepmaker, is the largest supplier of standard 'compliant' bunk beds to the Australian market, with more than 25 compliant bunks available.
